We’ve had the pleasure of watching the development of 6’3 senior Avery Metcalf for the past three years. He has been a regular of the NC Phenom 150 camp and was a member of the inaugural NC Top 80 camp. He has been a consistent player in camp settings, AAU and in high school competition. More importantly, Metcalf sports a 3.1 GPA and recently became Hickory Ridge High School all time leading scorer.

At our 2013 NC Phenom 150 camp, we wrote, “Avery’s strongest attribute is his decision-making and ability to shoot off the dribble. He can flat out score points or create ample scoring opportunities for his teammates by his dribble penetration and kick out. Avery has a full throttle approach to the game and you will always find him in constant motion. He has good athleticism and lateral quickness.”

Last year at the NC Phenom 150 camp, he continued to showcase his all around game. We wrote, “Avery is blessed with natural length and athleticism, but also possesses a skill set that he has worked very work to attain. Avery is a glue man on the offensive end with his ability to do a lot of things with the ball. He is someone who takes defense personal, showing an ability to defend on the ball and the wing.”

Time and time again, Avery Metcalf has shown a consistency on the court. He has worked extremely work on his game and for some odd reason is still playing under the collegiate radar. Hickory Ridge Head Coach Scott Fortune recently stated, Avery Metcalf is a 6’2 strong, combo guard that has high basketball IQ. He has had to step up and play the role of a point guard this season as well. Some of Avery’s strengths include his shooting ability. His ability to pull up after 2 or 3 dribbles. He has improved his ball handling and his ability to get to the rim. He has deep range on his 3-point shot and he shoots above 85% from the free throw line.

He is a good defender with quick hands and quick feet that can guard multiple positions on the perimeter. Avery was voted by his teammates to be a captain and leads by example. He is a high character young man who is well respected around the campus by his teachers and peers.”

Currently, Hickory Ridge is 6-2 with the two loses coming to NCHSAA 3A powerhouse JM Robinson and Cox Mill. Through eight games, Avery Metcalf is averaging 22PPG, 5RPG and 3APG. He has scored over 1150 career points at Hickory Ridge and as we alluded to earlier has become the schools all time leading scorer. So far, Boston University and Pfeiffer have reached out to Avery, but schools especially at the D2 level should take a long, hard look at the athleticism, skillset, and most of all the high academic record of a high character young prospect. Sometimes, college coaches and scouting pundits get caught in the flash all at the expense of substance. With Avery Metcalf, you know exactly what you’re getting. You’re getting a hard working young man who excels both in the classroom as well as the hardwood. He is well grounded and more than anything will be a low risk high return prospect.
