6’2 ’19 Tate Johnson (Metrolina Christian)
All Around Guy Off to a Great Start
6’2 junior Tate Johnson is the consummate student athlete. First of all, Tate sports an impressive 4.7 GPA and posted a 31 score on the ACT. He is the Student Council President at Metrolina Christian and is an Honor Society Member. In addition, he is a three-sport athlete at Metrolina Christian. In 2016, Tate was All-State, MAC Conference Champion in Cross -Country and in 2017 was the Conference Champion in the 400, 800, and 4×400 in Track and Field.
Last season for Metrolina Christian, Tate averaged 10 PPG and 4 APG and enjoyed a banner summer with PSB Select travel team where he averaged 21 PPG. For the 2017-18 season, Tate is leading Metrolina to a 5-0 start. In his game last night, Tate had a game high 21 points including an impressive 6-7 from the 3-point line.
We’ve had several chances to watch Tate over the past few years. Whether it is in high school, travel ball or at the Phenom 150 camps, Tate has always shown the ability to score. At our most recent Phenom 150 camp held this past October, we wrote the following. “Offensively, Tate is able to hit shots on all three level, and though he is a better shooter than penetrator, there are no scoring issues here. On the other end of the floor, he showcased the ability to be a perimeter stopper as he was able to force his opponent into taking tough shots. Tate is a great team player and looks to get his teammates involved often. He shot the ball well throughout camp and didn’t force the issue.”
One thing is for certain, Tate has shown the ability to balance out his ability to score and facilitate as a passer. He has excellent court vision, high basketball IQ, and great overall feel for the game. Tate has also balanced out his academics and his athletic success on the basketball court. His success on the basketball court has dovetailed with his success in the classroom. For Tate Johnson, he simply gets it. He understands the important of academics and this success has led to collegiate interest from high academic schools such as those in the Patriot League. The sharpshooting guard should see his stock continue to grow. As we have always stated, shooters translate at every level and his skill set and academic success should make him a high priority among high academic schools.
