The annual NC Top 80 once again showcased some of the premier talent from across North Carolina, featuring players who continue to elevate their stock heading into the high school season. From explosive scorers to high-upside bigs, here are several standouts who left a lasting impression.
2026 6’2 Chaise Smith – Washington
Chaise Smith continues to impress with his elite blend of explosiveness and shot creation. The guard was one of the toughest covers on the floor, consistently breaking down defenders and attacking the paint at will. Smith uses his athleticism and body control to finish through contact, and his ability to create tough shots off the dribble sets him apart. He’s also shown growth as a playmaker, reading defenses and finding teammates when the lane collapses. With his competitiveness and motor, Smith looks ready to take the next step as one of the more dynamic guards in his class.
2027 6’5 KJ Terry – Southern Durham
KJ Terry has continued to establish himself as one of the most versatile and intriguing prospects in the state. His combination of size, strength, and skill allows him to impact the game in a variety of ways. Defensively, he guards multiple positions with ease and uses his frame to disrupt plays. Offensively, Terry’s ability to attack downhill and make reads off the dribble stands out—he can finish with either hand, absorb contact, and consistently make plays for others. His motor and confidence are trending upward, and it’s clear he’s just scratching the surface of his potential.
2026 6’11 Prince Nwokemodo – Forsyth Country Day
Few players made their presence felt inside the paint like Prince Nwokemodo. The 6’11 big man continues to develop into a true interior force, using his size, length, and quick second jump to control the glass and finish strong around the rim. He runs the floor hard and plays with a high motor, rarely taking possessions off. Defensively, Nwokemodo changes the game with his rim protection and ability to contest shots without fouling. As his footwork and touch continue to improve, his upside as a lob threat and defensive anchor becomes more evident every time he steps on the floor.
2026 6’8 Deuce Haynes – Providence Day
Deuce Haynes has quietly been making major strides in his development, and his play at the NC Top 80 reflected that growth. The forward looks stronger, more fluid, and more confident in his movements. He’s beginning to showcase an improved shooting touch from the midrange and perimeter while still being able to finish through traffic around the rim. Haynes plays with a physical edge, rebounding with effort and defending multiple positions. His combination of power, touch, and improved mobility make him a frontcourt player college coaches will want to continue tracking closely.
2027 6’3 Brennen Jefferson – Knightdale
Brennen Jefferson’s impact may not always be loud, but it’s always felt. He plays a mature, efficient game — one built on making the right play and maximizing every possession. Jefferson can score from all three levels, using his smooth jumper and strong frame to get to his spots and finish at the rim. He’s equally comfortable playing on or off the ball, showing the IQ to find open teammates and maintain the flow of the offense. Defensively, he competes with toughness and uses his positioning to limit opponents. Jefferson continues to be a steady riser whose complete skill set translates well to winning basketball.
2027 6’6 James Minlend – Concord Academy
James Minlend continues to show flashes of a high-ceiling prospect that could become a major name in the state. With his size, length, and advanced offensive polish, Minlend already stands out as a natural scorer. He has a smooth shooting stroke from the perimeter, can handle in transition, and uses his athleticism to attack closeouts and finish above the rim. His confidence continues to grow, and as he refines his handle and consistency, his stock will only rise. Minlend’s combination of physical tools and offensive skill gives him the look of a future high-level wing prospect.
