Player: Kamsi Awaka
Class: 2027

College coaches and scouts are increasingly focusing on players in the Class of 2027, as the Class of 2026 nears completion.  Getting a look at the next wave of players down the road, programs should be taking a hard look at a rising big that impressed Phenom Hoops years ago and seems to be catching the attention of many now.

2027 6’10 Kamsi Awaka from Blair Academy is a prospect that many should start learning more about.  When watching him nearly a year and a half ago, Awaka quickly grabbed the attention of our scouts at Phenom Hoops, as our own Patrick O’Brien had this to say about the young big man.

“Awaka has such a unique blend of size, strength, and physicality at a young age, along with a blossoming feel for the game down in the paint.  He does a nice job in being a force and looking to body up the opponent down in the post, scoring well through contact or getting to the line, helping attack the boards to create second-chance opportunities, and can have a huge impact on the boards overall.  That doesn’t mention his ability to control and man the paint, using his long wingspan and timing to alter shots or make it difficult for opponents to attack the lane. Right now, Awaka has been earning some early offers already from Fordham, High Point, Iona, and Rhode Island, but we would have to think that this is just the start for this young man.  He should be a hot target for many schools coming up and that list will quickly grow in the coming years.”

Awaka has such intrigue with size and physical nature, as he brings power and strength down in the paint.  His ability to embrace contact and finish strong, as well as run the floor, control the glass, and just power his way through opponents on either side has been impressive. Awaka shows a good skillset along with potential in his game, being a big man that can control the paint defensively as well as a developing offensive game; this should only appeal to more college coaches as we expect his recruitment to take another step.

Right now, he has recently earned an offer from Maryland while also holding offers from Rhode Island, Iona, High Point, and Fordham. But again, expect more college programs to enter the picture soon, and this upcoming high school season.
