2026 6’9 Heimir Helgason continues to be an intriguing prospect to watch out for in the upcoming recruiting class. A 6’9 forward that brings a strong skill set and potential, he was one who quickly made waves here in North Carolina
“When you watch his game, his blend of potential and overall skillset is quite impressive. With his size at 6’9, his fluidity, and his ability to be an effective option in so many areas, Helgason offers a lot as a matchup problem and I believe that he is just scratching the surface of what he could potentially be. Helgason with his size allows him to be an effective option down low in the paint, as he moves quickly, has a strong feel in how to operate, and can finish at the rim or with touch down low. That doesn’t mention his impact on the boards as well as showing his athleticism in helping control the paint defensively. But what makes him so fascinating with his game is how he can stretch the floor; he is comfortable facing up with his mid-range game, knocking down shots, or putting it on the deck to create. Helgason even is comfortable and reliable from behind the arc, getting to his spots and displaying a fluid, confident release from three. He reads the defense well in finding ways to score, making opponents pay from the perimeter but also being skilled enough to create and attack. His mobility and fluidity also come into play in transition, beating a lot of his opponents down the court and creating easy opportunities. Again though, there are still areas he is working on and developing, as well as getting stronger. But one can’t deny that the upside with this young man’s game is there, which is why he has been and should be trending as a national prospect in the area.”
Though he is in Iceland at the moment before heading back to the US and suit up for DME Academy, Phenom Hoops was able to get in touch with Helgason to ask him about the latest. He added yet another offer to his list as it continues to grow, and he has a few visits set up.
Recruitment Update:
As far as recruitment is going, Helgason continues to pick up steady offers from programs. He just added another offer from Dayton, now joining teams like FGCU, Mississippi State, UMass, UCF, Duquesne, Nebraska, Illinois State, East Carolina, Chattanooga, Stetson, Wyoming, and Hampton.
As far as scheduled visits go, Helgason has two visits already on the books with a visit to Duquesne on September 21st weekend and then one to Wyoming on October 4th. Helgason would say those two schools have really been recruiting him the hardest, along with UMass.
