Opportunity is one of the most important things in life. We see a job, connection, or general circumstances as a newfound chance to seize what we value. Basketball is no different, particularly in today’s world. There are countless examples of players taking advantage of fresh opportunities to properly spread their wings. Oftentimes, these situations involve reclassifying, transferring schools, or completely relocating to another state. Each individual has their own race to run. This notion feels especially true for Geren Holmes, who is on the cusp of blowing up following his recent transfer and reclassification at The Burlington School. Let’s take a closer look…

Make no mistake, Holmes was already a noteworthy prospect at Garner. He showed up to North Carolina two years ago and quickly carved out a role for the Trojans. Although Holmes possessed obvious appeal to college coaches as a 2026 prospect, reclassifying to 2027 allows him to develop on the correct trajectory. Why? Holmes was extremely young for his grade and now gets to compete for offers with kids of his actual age. Thus far, Holmes is winning the battle. He’s already collected offers from East Carolina and Western Carolina, but it truly feels like just the beginning for the 6-foot-5 wing prospect.

In looking at his actual game, there’s a lot to like. Holmes is skilled, athletic, and comfortable with or without the ball in his hands. He possesses great positional size with a strong body and the physicality to overwhelm opponents on both ends of the floor. Holmes’ foundation has always been centered around his elite perimeter shooting, however, it’s easy to see the strides he’s actively making as a creator for himself and others. In his expanded role for the Spartans, Holmes has taken on more initiation and playmaking duties. He’s still very reliable in spot-up situations or cutting without the ball, but can alter his approach as needed. Holmes is a quality defender with the tools to truly shut down opponents. Add in his solid rebounding presence, and it’s easy to see everything he brings to this group. Based on everything he’s shown over the recent months, Holmes is clearly trending as a top-ten player in North Carolina’s Class of 2027.
