6’5 senior Trey Wertz of Providence Day has verbally committed to head coach Herb Sendek of Santa Clara. We’re talking about a multi-talented combo guard that has tremendous length (6’9 wingspan) and a matching skill set. Wertz has gained a lofty reputation as one of the top shooters in the 2018 class in North Carolina. We have always been impressed with his smooth/fluid game that dovetailed with a calm and mature demeanor on the court. Wertz is simply a great all-around player. First of all, he knows the game, has a high basketball IQ and does so many positive things on the court. Known for his perimeter shooting over his high school career, Wertz has worked hard on enhancing his game by being an effective ball handler and having the ability to create his own shot off the dribble. In addition, Wertz has the ability to slide over to the point guard position as a secondary ball handler.

Wertz is a high academic student athlete that should fit in nicely with the academics and style of play at Santa Clara. Trey told Coach Sendek this past Monday before making his announcement a week later. In speaking with Trey, he stated, “Santa Clara is big on academics and Coach Sendek has won everywhere he has coached. They made me a priority since day one and never wavered in their interest in me. Coach Justin Gainey (Former NC State player) was his main recruiter. Coach Sendek likes big guards and he told me how I would fit into their system and style of play. He coached James Hardin when he was at Arizona State and I’ll be used in a similar fashion. “
