Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Xavier McKelvy
Class: 2022
Committed to: Winthrop

Stats Last Season:

McKelvy had a dominating junior season at United Faith last year, averaging 18.9 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, helping their team to an 18-4 overall record.  That is coming off a successful summer last year and this past season with the Charlotte Royals.

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

“In terms of sheer dominance, one would be hard-pressed to find many guys more consistently impressive than McKelvy. He’s a strong, intense, powerful guard prospect with explosiveness, vision, and the ability to score from all levels with consistency. McKelvy is phenomenal in the open floor but also more than capable of operating within the half-court. He also stands out as one of the better defenders and rebounders, especially for his position, in the state.”

“This young man continues to see his stock rise every time he steps on the court.  No matter who he faces, he brings it and competes and I love his consistency on the floor.  He brings the flash, the grit, and the toughness that you love; you have to really like how he can confidently step out and knock down perimeter shots but also get to the rim.”

““In terms of sheer dominance, one would be very hard-pressed to find many guys who could even match Xavier McKelvy’s production, leadership, and overall identity that he brings to the table. Everyone in the building is going to know about his powerful explosiveness upon a mere glance, but he’s far more than just an athlete. McKelvy really embraces being a tone-setter on both ends of the floor, consistently overwhelming his assignment defensively while being an all-around offensive catalyst. He’s phenomenal at getting downhill and attacking the basket or accessing his lethal pull-up from midrange, yet also displays vision and a willingness to make unselfish decisions with the ball in his hands. McKelvy is capable of knocking down three-pointers at a solid clip but mainly looks to keep opponents on their heels through his penetrating and transition presence. While his offensive game is very dependable, McKelvy is equally as strong on the defensive end of the floor. His combination of IQ, quickness, and anticipation allows him to pressure opposing ball-handlers, intercept passing lanes, and force turnovers at a strong rate. Additionally, he’s quite a reliable rebounder for his size/position.”

“With college coaches sitting baseline, I fully expect more offers to come his way and he showed why in Game 1 at the Summer Havoc.  You can almost get mesmerized in his play with his frame, his smoothness, his change of pace and direction, and his athleticism.  He was scoring once again from all areas with a ton of confidence but that is nothing new to see.”

“McKelvy simply put on a show, one that certainly many won’t forget.  The strong guard took over and propelled his team to a win, scoring 22 of his 33 points in the second half, knocking down shots from behind the arc, and finishing strong around and at the rim. He is simply a D1 player in my eyes and he is showing that time and time again.”
