Over the last few years, player movement has become somewhat of a commonality within the grassroots and high school scene. Hundreds of prospects opt to transfer in hopes of putting themselves in a better basketball situation, whether defined as expanded role, improved coaching, or something completely different. On the other side of things, these articles highlighting the positives surrounding transfers tend to bother select individuals. Last year, we examined a major North Carolina transfer and previewed his expected role, growth, and production. Although literally everything stated was either true or would eventually come to fruition, it still ruffled some feathers. That being said, it seems increasingly likely for Jaydin Spillman to breakout and watch his recruitment explode upon making the move to Calvary Day School.
First, it’s necessary to preface that Spillman definitely made improvements during his time at Winston-Salem Christian. If one were to seek out a justification from the potential reasons listed above, general fit is clearly the most likely. Between he, Christ Essandoko, and Brandon White, one guy was always going to receive less minutes than the other two. However, it’s important to look forward rather than overanalyze the past. So, what can we expect from Spillman in terms of output and fit within the Cougars’ overall scheme'

While the roster is already littered with numerous talented players and plenty of prospects who will ultimately advance to the college level, Spillman should be a focal point upon immediate arrival. He’s showcased steady yet drastic development throughout the last few years, transitioning from an intriguing prospect with size to an obvious target for various levels of Division I programs. Though it’s taken some time, Spillman’s on-court identity has blossomed into that of a highly desirable, modernized forward/post prospect. He’s a reliable option from the block, but Spillman can truly overwhelm opponents in a wide variety of ways. Between his IQ, vision, rebounding, shot-blocking instincts, and ability to score from all levels, there should already be a long line of suitors vying for his services. Add in his trajectory and continued upside remaining, and Spillman’s recruitment stands out as one of the more bizarre, unexplainable situations across the state.
Right now, college coaches are simply wrong about the kid. The response to that will likely be something like, “coaches are gradually getting involved with players in the Class of 2023,” but that’s nothing more than a fallacy at this point. Around two dozen players within North Carolina’s rising junior class have already received offers, and for Spillman to be exempt from that list is a legitimate travesty. Regardless, being a leader with complementary pieces like James Wilkins and Donovan Robinson among numerous others should allow Spillman to really take the next step—at least in the eyes of next-level programs. Additionally, Coach Joe Rybak has a proven track record of success and will put his newcomer in a position to succeed. Spillman has the tools and ability to be a top-five player within his class. Expect his production to soar and Division I coaches to take action as a direct result.
