Head coach George Marshall and Henderson Collegiate have proven themselves over the past two seasons, as they continue to rack up the wins and titles. One of the premier programs in the state is loaded with talent and hardworking prospects; one of those has been 2021 guard Javonte Waverly.
Coming off a season in which they finished 31-3 last year, Henderson Collegiate looked to test themselves and play against the best. After starting the season with a few tough losses against quality teams, it really seemed to pay off in the end.
“Overall, it was a great season,” Waverly told Phenom Hoops. “We had a few losses at the beginning of the season and everyone counted us out. We spent countless hours watching film then practicing to become a better team and it paid off. The losses showed that we could get beat. Coming off a 31-3 season, we felt that we were good. The losses made us work extremely hard to go against the odds.”
Regarded as one of the more intriguing guards in the state for his class, Waverly was one of those leaders all year long and really stepped his game up. He is taking that same mindset into this offseason as well, looking to show why more college coaches should be checking out his game.
“My focus right now is to become a better leader, to take Henderson Collegiate to another state championship,” he said. “This offseason, I’m looking to improve my speed, explosiveness, and continuing to work on a consistent jump shot at the mid-range and three-point level.”
When or if summer ball kicks back in, Waverly could be in line for a big jump with his recruitment. He still holds offers from UNCG and Elon but a few others are starting to enter the mix. Elon seems to be developing a strong relationship, as they are in constant contact each and every day and Waverly’s relationship with the coaches are strong. UNCG still remains in the picture as well, with Coach LePore being his main contact.
As far as other schools entering the picture, East Carolina, NC Central, Lehigh, and Presbyterian have been reaching out, as they are looking to develop a relationship with Waverly.
The rising senior guard though is a proven winner and one of the top guards in the state. With his vision, feel, scoring ability, and skillset, Waverly could be next in line to see a recruitment bump in the coming months.
