Lamont Jones 6’0 145 2021 Warhill High School, Williamsburg VA / VA Venom (Hughes) AAU
Speed is indeed a necessity among smaller players in today’s game and Lamont Jones certainly has more than his share of explosiveness and speed. When coupled with shooting touch from three point range and a very good pull up jumper off the dribble you have an impressive skill set capable of lighting up the scoreboard. Lamont Jones has those attributes and lighting up the scoreboard at a recent AAU event is what I watched him do….and he made it look routine. A tremendous athlete with a great motor Lamont can hit the catch and shoot jumper at a good rate and looks very comfortable pulling up off the dribble where he is polished and efficient. His high release and strong elevation, along with his quick first step allow him to create enough separation to get his shot off against taller defenders. He has basic ball moves when it comes to creating separation, but mainly uses his quickness and elite athleticism to get the room he needs. His first step is so explosive and he has the ability to stop on a dime and elevate into his jumper staying under control and on balance. Lamont uses that explosive first step to blow by defenders and demonstrates very good playmaking skills as he attacks the basket as a threat to score and pass. Lamont is a very good scorer and possesses a natural feel for the game. In fact his AAU Coach Jon Hughes said he expects Lamont to be one of the top scorers in the Bay Rivers District next season! Lamont has a knack for putting the ball in the basket from every angle. He has a pure jump shot and gets off the ground quickly with great elevation making his shot very difficult to contest. He employs a nice variety of moves off the dribble to compliment his quickness. Defensively he is big time! He creates havoc with persistent on ball pressure and the quickness to get in the ball handlers bubble and not get beat. Off the ball he is just as effective reading passing lanes and jumping to the pass with cat like quickness looking for steals. Lamont is a game changer on both sides of the court and should become a household name in the 757 next season. Look for some recruiting to pick up over the summer as well for the fleet footed, shot maker!
