The Woodside Wolverines will begin their second season under former Woodside High School and University of Arkansas star Stefan Welsh with some challenges and still high expectations. The challenges' Replacing a three year starter at guard in Xavier Askew, replacing 6’6 shot blocker Logan Washington who transferred to Life Christian Academy and replacing graduated three point specialist Demariyea Sills. The excitement revolves around the Wolverines big 4 of Matthew Nunez, Quishaun Brevard, Mikell Boyd and Kuron Coleman. Nunez, a 6’10 sophomore center already holds offers from Georgetown, VCU, Florida and St Louis and is a skilled post scorer both with his back to the basket and in face up opportunities. Nunez can shoot the jump hook over either shoulder and with his long arms and 6’10 frame that shot is indefensible in high school. He can also shoot the jumper out to three point range and has a great touch for a big man and sound mechanics. 6’2 junior guard Quishaun Brevard is a solid floor leader who controls tempo and mixes crafty basket attacking drives with a smooth jumper and excellent range. Uses his dribble nicely to create offense for teammates and is a skilled passer with great vision. Quishaun has a solid pull-up jumper and is a very good defender as well. He holds a Hampton University offer and will likely add to that offers list this season. An exciting, high flying and extremely athletic wing, 6’6 junior Mikell Boyd is a slasher type whose long strides and quickness make him difficult to stay in front of. He attacks the basket aggressively and plays above the rim but can also knock down the spot up jumper to three point range. Woodside High School is also home to one of the 757’s top three point shot makers in 6’4 sophomore Kuron Coleman. Kuron also sports a 3.5gpa! Kuron is active off the ball, smart. He has excellent footwork and has quickened his release making it more difficult to contest given his length and deep range. He can hit shots both spotting up and off the dribble and is becoming more of a multi-level scoring threat. Certainly an offensive threat far beyond the arc and can really get hot and fill it up. The transfer of 5’11 junior guard and two sport star Kahleef Jimmison from Hampton Roads Academy will pay immediate dividends. Kahleef is an extraordinary athlete having rushed for over 1,000 yards while at HRA playing both running back and cornerback he brings sound playmaking skills and scoring to the basketball court. A guard who can run the offense and distribute the basketball capably, Kahleef has a solid handle and the ability to get to the rim and score. Also brings lockdown defense and a scrappy defensive mentality. Kahleef picked up a Hampton University offer in April. 6’9 junior center Xavier Burdette could become a contributor sooner than later. Obviously long, raw but progressing rapidly, the lanky Burdette doesn’t mind the physicality inside and has added some reverse pivot moves and shot making variety to his repertoire. He really has a chance to be very good as he is active on the glass and has shot blocking potential. 6’1 sophomore guard Avery Scott and 6’0 freshman AJ Olgadez, a transfer from Seattle WA should also contribute. A pair of guards both are strong defensively and have the ability to use their dribble to create for others. The Woodside basketball program has enjoyed a lot of success over the years and Coach Stefan Welsh has been a key figure in the Woodside basketball history. Coach Welsh was a member of the 2004 and 2005 state championship teams before leaving for Hargrave Military Academy where he played a key role in helping them win the 2006 National Prep School Championship. A 6’4 160 pound 4-star guard, Welsh entertained several Division I offers before selecting the University of Arkansas where he helped lead them to the NCAA tournament in 2008. Welsh also enjoyed time in the NBA D League and overseas before returning to his alma mater with the hopes of leading Woodside to another state tournament, this time from the sidelines as the head coach.
