The state of South Carolina continues to be such an intriguing state for hidden talent, and we have a player who could be next in line as a player that college coaches will really want to check out more. 2028 6’8 Jamel McKinley from Cane Bay HS and Team Unleashed has shown promise this summer on the Phenom Hoops platform, along with others.
McKinley has a unique blend of length, athleticism, and skillset as a 6’8 prospect, being able to attack and run from rim to rim, finishing high and with authority, but also showing true promise in his ability to stretch the floor, create off the bounce, and be a presence on the defensive end as well. He was able to showcase that and much more recently at the Phenom QC Showcase, where our scouts had this to say after:
“McKinley is one we have watched before, but it was great to get another view of this intriguing prospect. Standing as a 6’8 prospect, McKinley brings tremendous length and fluidity. When we watched him as a young prospect, he was able to shine with his size as a finisher and paint protector. He can still provide that on the court, as he runs well from rim to rim and can be a presence on both sides of the ball around the basket. But he has also clearly added more comfort in his ability to stretch the court at times. He moves well throughout the floor and still possesses intriguing potential for growth.” – Patrick O’Brien
“McKinley used his size and athleticism to impact the game in multiple ways. He was active on the glass, tracked down rebounds, and altered shots around the rim defensively. Offensively, he showed improvement as the game progressed, finishing plays effectively and capitalizing on his opportunities, especially in the second half.” – Chris Ewell
McKinley possesses the tools that will automatically attract the attention of college coaches, as Coastal Carolina is already on board. But with all that he has to offer, along with the potential of growth in what he could be, McKinley is trending as a player you will be hearing a lot more about in the coming years.
