
The 2027 class continues to produce rising talent, and one name that’s quickly climbing the radar is 6’1 guard Jaylen Hunter-Coleman from Newman High School. Known for his toughness, leadership, and ability to impact winning, Hunter-Coleman has developed into a hard-nosed, athletic guard that can impact the game in a variety of ways. Now part of the Class of 2027 and coming into Newman after being crowned a state champion at Charlestown HS, he looks to bring his leadership and set the tone for his team’s pursuit of a title this year..
Off the court, his recruitment continues to heat up, with recent offers from Holy Cross and Towson, joining previous offers from Boston and Gardner-Webb. But other schools have been showing interest, including his dream school. We caught up with Hunter-Coleman on all the latest that is going on his way.
Phenom: How would you best describe your game and how you like to operate?
Hunter-Coleman: I’d describe my game as a hard-nosed guard who will take any challenge against anyone. Very strong in transition, getting to the rim, and able to facilitate and find my guys at any time. Also being above the rim and a great finisher at the rim.
Phenom: How are you preparing yourself for the upcoming high school seaso,n and what is your overall focus?
Hunter-Coleman: Being the point guard for Newman, I understand the responsibility that comes with my role. Leadership is a big part of that, and I’m committed to doing whatever my team needs, whether it’s setting the tone, making plays, or keeping everyone focused to help us win and chase both a NEPSAC and national championship.
Recruitment Update:
Recruitment has been going great,” Hunter-Coleman told Phenom Hoops. “I just received two offers from Holy Cross and Towson in the past two days! And I have offers from Boston and Gardner-Webb.”
When speaking with him more, he mentioned that Holy Cross and Towson have certainly been two programs recruiting him hard as of late and that they are definitely making a great effort to show that they would really love him to attend their program.
“They have been saying I’m the type of guard they want,” he said about the two programs. “I’m a tough-nose guard that can really fit with their type of play.”
Outside the offers he holds, Hunter-Coleman has been receiving some strong interest from several other schools, including Marquette, Boston College, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Stanford, several Ivy League schools, and others. As far as any of those schools standing out, Hunter-Coleman mentioned his dream school to be Marquette, and it is a school he would really like to take a visit to along with Stanford down the road.
