High School: Grand Prairie High School

Back in 2023, Phenom Hoops was on deck for the Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp, bringing some terrific talent to the court. One player that caught our attention was 2027 Steven McLeod from Grand Prairie HS in Texas.

At the event, we had this to say about his game:

“McLeod is an intriguing prospect to keep tabs on. He has a long 6’8 frame to go along with a good wingspan as well. He showed a lot of flashes but is still raw in some areas, but that just seems to be a matter of time as he develops. McLeod was able to make an impact on both sides, whether it was blocking and altering shots or finishing around the basket. He showed flashes of his ability to step out and handle as well; there is a lot to like in flashes but you can see when it all comes together, he has a chance to be special.”

He certainly has been elevating and developing his game, and college programs are noticing more of his game since then as he has added multiple D1 offers. We were able to catch up with McLeod as he recently earned an offer from California, and others are coming his way. See what he had to say.

How has the season been going overall for you'

“The season has been going pretty well. We are tied for first place in district & the team has been clicking as of late and I’ve been averaging roughly 16.5 pts, 8.5 rebs, and 1blks a game.”

What has been your mindset this season with your game'

“Going out there and doing whatever it takes to get the team a win. Trying to be the best player on the court every time I play.”

What areas of your game are you looking to focus on and improve in'

“Getting stronger and improving my ball-handling mainly. Being able to make plays consistently off the dribble at my size. I keep working on my mid-range game daily. That is the strongest part of my game and lost post-scoring.”

What has been going on recruiting-wise for you'

“I’ve recently picked up a California. I also have offers from Mississippi State and Auburn as of now. I’ve heard from a few in-state schools but nothing major yet. TCU was one earlier in the year.”

What are your thoughts on your recent offer from Cal' What do you know about them'

“It’s a blessing. I’ve been working hard leading my team and I appreciate Coach Matt for reaching out to me. I know they have produced Jaylen Brown and Jaylon Tyson, and they play in the ACC.”

Any dream school in your mind'

“I really just want to pick a school that allows me to play my style of play within the offense, but if I had to pick, I would say Duke.”
