In recent news, you may have heard that 2023 6’7 Gabe Warren announced that he would be making the move from John Paul II to So Cal Academy, looking to compete on the biggest of stages. Phenom Hoops was able to catch up with the junior prospect to talk to him about the move and his excitement about it, as well as the latest on what is going on with his recruitment.
Phenom: How has everything been going as far as basketball for you'
Warren: It has been good. Been training heavy, won states, and having a great summer so far with Southern Assault as well. Gaining some college looks. So, in all honesty, I can’t complain.
Phenom: Playing with Southern Assault this summer. How has that been with your teammates so far'
Warren: It has been great. The whole team is family and we are continuously getting better. It has been a great experience.
Phenom: How would you best describe your game and what are you hoping to show more about your game with your game this summer'
Warren: I would describe my game as versatile and impactful on both ends of the floor. And I want to show more handle and ability to shoot off the dribble.
Phenom: You just announced you’re transferring to So Cal. What is your excitement with that program and what do you hope to bring to the court for that team'
Warren: I am very excited about the opportunity to get better and develop under a great coaching staff. And I hope to bring leadership, consistency, and work ethic.
Phenom: How do you think playing with that program will help elevate your play'
Warren: I think that I will be put in a situation that forces me to get better. I already consider my work ethic great, but this will be organized work every day, which will ultimately prepare me for the next level.
Phenom: How has everything been going recruiting-wise for you'
Warren: It has been good. It has been steady here recently, just want to solidify the schools that have strong interest. Process has been a blessing.
Phenom: What offers do you hold' And who has been staying strong with you'
Warren: TCU, Rice, UT-Arlington, and Oakland. They have all been solid through this process.
Phenom: What are your thoughts on each school so far that has offered' What kind of relationships have you built or what do you like about them'
Warren: I like that TCU plays at a faster pace and play both ends of the court. They believe I would fit into that style of play. I like that Rice also has a high focus on academics. They think that I will make a huge impact in their program right off. They also play freedom ball, so they would let me play. I like the faster style of play at Oakland. They think that my full game on both sides of the court will benefit me and help their program. I like the focus on team and coaches are family atmosphere at UTA. They think I would fit into the movement of the offense and defense as well.
Phenom: Who would you say is staying strong as far as interests'
Warren: All the schools that have offered as well as Stanford, Arkansas, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Colorado. Ohio State and Cal have been in contact recently but they are new interests.
Phenom: Have you been able to make any visits'
Warren: I have only been on one unofficial visit to UT-Arlington. Been to a few TCU games but I’m planning some visits now.
Phenom: Any specific schools or dates you have set'
Warren: Discussed but not set. I plan to schedule them later this summer, towards the end of summer.
