Greetings HS hoops junkies from across the beach going piedmont. The Sadster is here to recap the final day of the Phenom Team Camp Session 1 at Queens University. Day 3 saw some upsets and North Meck’s younger players playing 3 games. It also saw more of the rise of Cabarrus County Part 2. Let’s get to the game recaps….

To kick off Day 3, Kannapolis Brown shocked Independence 58-50 behind Kheni Briggs 16 points. Amari Haynie added 12 and Jamarian Glenn put up 8 points and 7 boards for the up and coming Wonders. Anthony Allen and Nygell Verdier posted 16 and 11 respectively for the Big I. K-town is going to love this group as the South Piedmont 3A is blessed with several good squads this winter.

The 2nd tilt saw Mtn. Heritage down Combine Academy’s varsity 43-28. Nathan Ledford led Heritage with 11 and Logan Higgins managed 8 in a support role. Heritage also had an impressive outing by Justus Shelton, a 6’10 fundamentally sound 2020 C who controlled the paint.

Game 3 had Newton Conover pasting Lincolnton 57-36. Pit Bull Maverick Davis and work horse Matthew Martinez each registered 17 for the Red Devils. Davis Grooms was the bright spot for the Wolves with 11.

Game 4 featured a 44-37 comeback win by Chapmanville, WV over SW Guilford. Andrew “Elvis” Shull led the charge with 17 and Obinna Killen added 15 for the victors. Miles Taylor and Bryce Causey each had 8 for the Cowboys.

Game 5 saw Cherryville survive a buzzer beating attempt by N. Davidson to sneak off with a 51-50 win. Lane Harrill poured in 28 points for the Ironmen and Landon Moore paced North with 11.

The next game saw Mtn Heritage use a buzzer beating 3 pointer from Nathan Ledford to carve out a 58-56 win over Bishop McGuinness. Ledford led Heritage with 12 points and Justus Shelton added 10 of his own. Noah Allred led Bishop with 13 and Jake Ledbetter added 12. Andrew Budzinski had an 8 point and 7 rebound game for the Villains in a losing effort.

Game 7 saw another tight game as Newton Conover escaped with a 42-39 decision over N. Davidson. Matthew Martinez and Keenan Guerry each tallied 13 for the Devils. Jamarien Dalton had 13 for North.

Next, we had Lincolnton getting redemption with a 52-45 win against York Prep. Dejarrieus Gash collected 13 points and Gavin Queen added 10 for Los Lobos.

York was led by 17 from Kendall Davis.

In the game of the day, North Meck, playing with mostly JVs, topped Southern Durham 67-65 in a great game. 6’6 2022 Jeremy Gregory led the Vikings overall effort with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Cam Gates also chipped in 22 for the winners. Ricky Council IV led Southern with 27 points, including an assortment of dunks.

The final game saw Greensboro Smith top Bishop McGuinness 43-36. Silas Mason led the charge with 18 and Khalid Hines contributed 15 of his own. Noah Allred paced the Villains with 13.

There you have it folks! The 2019 Phenom Team Camp Session 1 at Queens University is in the books. Session 2 is June 28-30 so coaches make sure and fill out a complete roster of names for every game.
