Piedmont tops Ws Prep 65-57 in battle of Triad Powers
Piedmont Classical (5-5), came into this contest looking to snap a two- game losing skid, the second year program was able to get a trademark win over a talented Phoenix team. Coming in WS Prep (3-3), was undefeated at home and had big momentum rolling in fresh off a 24- point annihilation of cross town rival West Forsyth.
The Bobcats really set the tone from jump ball and never looked back, they were able to build a double digit lead going into half. Guard play and execution were the difference in this one, Travon Mayo was the best player on the floor and he finished with a game high 17 pts. Mayo also rebounded the ball well, and anchored the defense in a strong effort to keep a loaded Prep backcourt in check.
2018 unsigned guard Brian Free provided stability in the backcourt, he shot it well from deep and constantly looked to make the extra pass.
Coach Gould’s side did well moving the rock and finding open shooters but shots just didn’t fall on this night. 2018 ETSU commit Davien Williamson tied a team high for his side with 12 points, majority of them coming in the second half. Williamson didn’t shoot it particularly well but he was aggressive attacking the cup, at one point late in the fourth Williamson earned three consecutive trips to the stripe.
2019 Zack Austin was a spark plug for the Phoenix on both ends, Austin is a first year starter but it seems he is finding his role. When Ws Prep made their runs and came within single digits it was sparked by a flush or block from Austin to wake the gym up.
Piedmont will look to carry this momentum into their next contest against Elevation Prep Academy.
The Phoenix will have a few days off before they strap up against inner city rival Carver High School.
