It took 14 years for someone to approach JamesOn Curry's, seemingly unapproachable, scoring record. It was a record that was held (prior to Curry) since 1959 by Cotton Clayton and Curry broke that 45 year old record by 549 points. Now North Carolina’s All-Time Leading Scorer is Coby White.

With the likes of Michael Jordan, Chris Paul, James Worthy, Antawn Jamison and many others having come through North Carolina schools in that time frame none approached these numbers. That is until 5-star UNC signee Coby White entered Greenfield School, as a freshman, in 2014. No reclass, no varsity play while in middle school, White broke this record in only 4 seasons.

His freshman year, White burst on the scene about half way through and really opened eyes during the NCISAA playoffs that year. His freshman year he averaged 13 points and earned an invite to the prestigious North Carolina Top 80 event. After his performance at his first NC Top 80 we wrote, '6'3 Freshman Coby White (Greenfield School) ' A name you probably don't know yet, but soon will. White plays with great poise and feel. A combo guard is able to shoot from beyond the arc, but also has the ability to create positive plays for his team mates. He is a major young prospect.'

White earned invitations, and competed in all 3 North Carolina Top 80s that he was eligible for. Then his sophomore year came and White started coming into his own as a player. He averaged 28 points per game. Then again as a sophomore, White elevated his play yet again. His aggression and his explosion took extra steps forward as he averaged a whopping 32 points for the year. His junior year is also the year he stepped into Top 100 rankings and committed to his dream school, UNC.

Tragedy hit White during the summer between his junior and senior seasons, read Jason Jordan's article here. He bounced back from his father's passing with a vengeance. He dominated Nike's EYBL playing with Team CP3 all summer. He then had his sights set on buckets. In December he broke Donald Williams' 27 year old scoring record at the Holiday Invitational finishing with 119 points over the three game stretch.

Then there was this, the all-time North Carolina high school scoring record. White calculated that he would need to average 25 points per game and he should break it some time in February. Not only did he do that, White averaged 31 points and broke the record in January.

So much can be said about the development of White. So much can be written about the character of White and his competitive nature. However, winning is of the utmost importance. Walk into any Greenfield open gym practice and you will find guys who are playing professionally overseas, throughout the gym and White expects his high school teammates to win every game. He holds everyone around him to the same high standard he holds himself.

While averaging 31 points during his senior season, White is also averaging 9 rebounds and 8 assists per game. His team currently stands 19-9 overall and 5-0 in the conference. White's current record stands at 3,325 career points. He still has 4 regular season and conference tournament games remaining and then starts the single elimination state championship play. He can play as many as four games there, depending on where they are seeded.

Without question, this is a special and very rare event. Congrats to Coby White and we are very excited to have been a big part of your journey to this point and we will certain be one of your biggest fans as your career continues forward.
