On Tuesday, Phenom Hoops traveled to Greensboro Day School for an inter-conference battle between the Bengals and the visiting Forsyth Country Day Furies. It was an excellent opportunity to see the GDS coaching staff work out the early-season kinks and utilize their bench. On the opposite side, we were looking to see what the Furies have to offer since the change in coaching regime.

This contest quickly took off with GDS setting the tone on both ends of the floor, being patient on offense, working the interior, making purposeful passes, and controlling the glass. Josh Taylor actually scored the first ten points for the Bengals, forcing FCDS into a corner before even getting halfway through the opening period. It began to get ugly, as the Furies simply could not match the incredible depth of GDS, closing the quarter with a score of 25-9. The second quarter was no different and the Bengals entered the half with a 39-16 lead. After halftime, Garrett Flinchum was able to consistently find his shot and get going from the field, while still being the clear leader of this group. His efforts weren't enough, as GDS closes the third quarter with a 66-28 lead, and ultimately finishing the game with a 84-39 victory over FCDS.

Greensboro Day

6'8 '21 Josh Taylor

After scoring the first ten points, Taylor was relatively quiet, but that's mainly due to his unselfishness and decrease in touches as the lead expanded. He showed touch and athleticism throughout this game, finishing strong with both hands around the basket, playing above the rim, and containing his assignment quite well on defense. Taylor's feel for the game is pretty strong, which allows his overall anticipation/timing to consistently shine on defense. He's comfortable handling the ball within two to three dribbles, but rarely forces the action and understands how to maximize his touches. It'll be exciting to watch Taylor physically develop over the next few years, especially if he maintains quality aggression on the court. Final stats: 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 block.

6'3 '21 Carson McCorkle

The Virginia commit was the steadiest performer on either squad, doing a little bit of everything while still applying efficient scoring pressure from start to finish. He showed the ability to create opportunities for himself and others without turning over the ball. McCorkle operated nicely with the ball in his hands and was able to make his presence felt from all three levels on offense. He was also the second-best rebounder in the gym, which was definitely a positive sign for his all-around approach. Final stats: 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal.

6'7 '19 Nick Evtimov

This was a great showing for the strong-bodied power forward, as he was the most unstoppable interior force on either team. Evtimov continued to work inside for quality low-post looks and was rewarded with numerous buckets. He was the best rebounder on either squad and did an excellent job of controlling the glass on both ends of the floor. It'll be interesting to see where he decides to further his playing career, as he'll be an impact player wherever he goes. Final stats: 13 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block.

Other noteworthy contributors:

6'3 '21 Cam Hayes- 7 points, 2 assists, 4 steals

6'8 '19 Mike Fowler (JMU singee)- 4 points, 4 rebounds

6'4 '20 Cason Pierce- 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals

Forsyth Country Day

6'3 '19 Garrett Flinchum

The wing prospect was undoubtedly the most reliable two-way performer for the Furies. He set the tone defensively and communicated at all times, but struggled to assert himself in the first half. After the break, Flinchum refused to go down without a fight, putting the team on his back and scoring with great regularity. He has college-level ability and could thrive in the proper situation. Final stats: 16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.

Other noteworthy contributors:

6'7' 21 Davis Blackwell- 8 points, 4 rebounds

6'0 '20 Chance Carter- 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal
