We recently named 6’5 Frosh Trey Wertz (Santa Clara) to our early season standouts from the state of North Carolina for the class of 2018. https://www.phenomhoopreport.com/2018/12/07/early-season-collegiate-standouts-from-the-north-carolina-2018-class-part-2/. No one has followed the development of Trey Wertz more than Phenom Hoop Report. We’ve simply had the pleasure of watching him as a young boy attending our Drills and Skills Camp back in the day. We’re talking about when Trey was seven, eight, nine and even 10 years old. While we thought this young man could be really good, his overall early success at Santa Clara is great to see. Wertz is now averaging 12.8 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 4.3 APG, Standing a lengthy 6’5 with an enormous wingspan, Wertz usually played the “off guard” position in high school, but is transitioning to the point guard position for Santa Clara.

In the dramatic 102-92 double overtime win over Southern California last night, Wertz was instrumental in securing the win. He finished with a game high 28 points going 10-17 from the floor, 2-6 from the 3-point line and 6-7 from the free throw line, not to mention he collected six rebounds, dished out four assists and even had two steals. While his early success may be a surprise to some, it didn’t totally catch us off guard. One thing is for certain, Wertz always embraced the desire to improve and get better. He was like a sponge absorbing all the knowledge and skill sets needed to take him to the next level. He was a young man that was self-motivated, driven and wanted to succeed in the worst way. His work ethic was second to none and now he is showing the country that his name deserves to be mentioned as one of the top young freshmen in the country.
