Everywhere you look right now, the state of South Carolina is producing major talent. Every level has guys and yesterday Phenom Hoops walked into games at numerous levels. 1A and 2A private school as well as 4A public school.

What really struck us about these games, other than that athleticism and the crowd, was the number of young kids who were tracking at a D1 level. Here are some of the underclassmen we watched yesterday who really stood out.

6’5” 2020 Quentin Hodge
Lakewood High School (Sumter, SC)

Hodge has all the makings of a high major wing. He is explosive, he has ball skills and he has range extending well beyond the arc. New to the school and young, he was the 4th/5th option for all of this year for Lakewood. Look for that role to change as soon as next year. Once he develops that alpha mentality and the pieces continue to come together, watch closely. He does high level stuff, naturally.

6’8” 2020 Patrick Iriel
AC Flora High School (Columbia, SC)

Iriel has all the tools and should go ahead and start to accumulate Division 1 offers asap. He has above the rim athleticism, the ability to attack off the bounce from multiple spots and touch from the free throw line in. We said this before, but if Iriel gets to be 6’10”+ we are talking about a Top 150 type prospect nationally. Heck, if he continues to expand his range and perimeter fluidity he may get there anyway. As for now, D1s should be knocking down his door, enjoy watching this one grow.

6’3” 2019 Mike Green
Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach (Myrtle Beach, SC)

Green’s is a known name since he was in middle school winning national championships with Carolina Preps (then CP3). However, the beautiful thing about Green’s mentality is he continued to work, got in the gym and has consistently improved his game. In this one, Green showcased the full arsenal. He is a dead eye shooter, always has been, but where you can see the difference is with his handle and footwork. Standing 6’3” he has good size and he knows his kill spots on the floor. He is able to get where he wants and plays very efficiently once there. He also is a very under rated passer. A 50% FG, 40% 3P, 3 Assist type player.

6’5” 2021 Yutan Bolton
Cathedral Academy (North Charleston, SC)

This one is completely unknown. We happened upon him during our Low Country Showcase when they agreed to play in the event at 2AM the night before (had a team cancel at 1AM). He walked into the gym and immediately impressed. We are talking about a lengthy wing, who has the ball skills to get downhill in traffic, the explosion to finish at the rim and the touch to shoot the jump shot. He started all 25 games this season for Cathedral Academy and has averaged 9.3 points, 67% FG, 40% 3P, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1 steal per contest. As he continues to grow and naturally get stronger watch out. A LOT to like here.

6’3” 2020 Maliek Brown
Palmetto Christian (Mount Pleasant, SC)

Our first time watching Brown was one year ago at the SCISA 1A semi finals. He impressed then, as a freshman, this year he has gotten bigger, strong and even more dominate making it hard to believe he is only a sophomore. This season the strong and explosive Brown averaged 22 points, shot 63% from the field, 10 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3 steals per game. He is one to watch moving forward as the production speaks for itself, but he is a selfless (lockdown type) defender who makes winning plays throughout the game.
